It comes from Tony Winton, president of the News Media Guild, and it’s about the Associated Press and the decision by staffers their to withhold their bylines as a protest against the management at the AP. The idea that a lack of bylines on AP stories would constitute a hardship is mildly amusing all on its own. But the really funny line is Mr. Winton’s remark that “Staffers recognize the tough times, but they also understand that quality journalism at AP means attracting and retaining the best employees.” The funny bit, for those of you who have not been following the fortunes of the Associated Press, is the conjunction of “quality journalism” and the phrase “at AP.” See, for example, here or here or here or here or . . . well, you get the point.
