There are increasing calls from Democrat power brokers to drop Kamala Harris from the ticket, which is only understandable given her catastrophic record throughout the disastrous three years-plus of the Biden regime. The putative vice president hasn’t addressed these calls directly, but on Friday, clearly hoping that her new stance would win her votes, she reversed a position for which she has drawn persistent and ongoing criticism (and, in some circles, admiration). So now we can add inconsistency and opportunism to her ever-growing list of drawbacks.
As Matt Margolis noted Saturday, the Washington Post, one of the foremost propaganda organs of the leftist elites, has just come out strongly for Harris to step down from the 2024 presidential ticket. The Post’s Kathleen Parker wrote that “the Democratic Party’s indulgence of identity politics has proved successful in building a diverse organization, but its strategy of courting (and pandering to) minority voters is the road to ruin.” Harris, who is only vice president because she is a woman and a “person of color,” and who has shown herself to be abjectly unsuited for national office, is Exhibit A of how identity politics has placed the Democrat Party, and the nation, on the road to ruin.
Lamenting Harris’ dismal performance as vice president, Parker insisted that she had started out with high hopes: “At the start of Biden’s term, I was pulling for Harris to do well. She had pizzazz and a reputation for being a tough prosecutor.”
As it happens, on Friday Harris showed just how right Parker was about how disappointing Harris had proved to be. The vice president grandly announced that “nobody should have to go to jail for smoking weed." This was a remarkable turnaround for the woman who stands a heartbeat away from the presidency, for while she was attorney general of California, she prosecuted not just a handful, but a whopping 1,956 cases of “marijuana possession, cultivation, or sale.”
Harris’ own presidential hopes were staggered in 2020, when one of her rivals, Tulsi Gabbard, said during a debate that Harris “put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations. And then laughed about it when she asked if she ever smoked marijuana.” Harris laughs whenever she is asked a question she cannot or does not wish to answer, but the point was clear: Harris made her reputation in part by appearing to be a leftist who was tough on crime, and was frankly hypocritical when she abandoned that tough stance in order to play Democrat identity politics and court the party’s stoner base.
So the woman formerly known as a “tough prosecutor” is now totally in favor of smoking weed, dude, and she and the Democrat bosses are apparently hoping that the spliff vote will put them over the top.
The problems with this strategy, however, are practically too numerous to count.
One of the foremost is that Harris appears to be unprincipled. Instead of standing by her marijuana prosecutions and endeavoring to show the nation that the Democrat Party is not entirely the party of self-indulgence, dissipation, and the abandonment of all responsibility and accountability, Harris has opted to reinforce that perception. Another is that while crime skyrockets, prosecutors falter, and our cities deteriorate into dangerous, threatening hellholes, Harris is pandering to the criminal element rather than calling for the hard decisions that will need to be made in order to restore sanity and law and order.

The Washington Post is right: Kamala Harris should indeed be dropped from the ticket, and her latest endorsement of weed is just new confirmation of her unsuitability for high office. Another problem the Democrats have, however, is that Old Joe Biden should be dropped from the ticket as well, and in the unlikely event that both Biden and Harris opt for a lucrative and cosseted retirement rather than further endurance of the slings and arrows that come with their figurehead positions, nobody who is waiting in the wings is any better. The party of Jefferson and Jackson has become the party of Michelle Obama and Gavin Newsom, and so Kamala Harris may end up being the most thoughtful and principled candidate that is available to our nation’s majority party.
Yeah, you read that right: Kamala Harris, more thoughtful and principled than her rivals. It’s that bad.
