This is a truly horrific video showing members of an Indonesian boy band getting swept away by the tsunami that struck the Sundra Strait yesterday following what was believed to be a volcanic eruption.
Crowds can be seen in the shocking video swaying along to a beach-side Saturday performance by the rock band Seventeen — seconds before the natural disaster hits, engulfing the stage.
Loud shrieks can be heard before the 11-second video goes dark.
The band confirmed that their bassist M Awal Purbani, guitarist Herman Sikumbang and their road manager Oki Wijaya were dead.
“The water washed away the stage… and dragged away everyone at the location,” the statement said.
Two other musicians, a crewmember and the wife of the band’s frontman are still missing.
“Please pray that we can find Andi, Herman and Ujang and my wife,” the lead singer, Riefian Fajarsyah, said in a tearful Instagram video.
Fajarsyah also posted a heartbreaking photo Sunday showing him and his wife, Dylan Sahara, kissing in front of the Eiffel Tower, with the caption: “Today is your birthday… hurry home dear.”
Almost exactly 14 years ago — December 26, 2005 — a massive earthquake under the Indian Ocean unleashed a powerful tsunami that killed an estimated 227,000 people in 14 countries. This earthquake may have been caused by an eruption by the volcano Krakatoa.
There didn’t appear to be any warning in the video, or perhaps it wasn’t heard over the music. So far, there are 222 dead, according to the Indonesian press, with the death toll expected to rise much higher.
