We reported in July that President Trump would begin preparations to send terrorists back to the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After a truck-driving terrorist killed 8 people yesterday in New York City, Trump says he may speed up the process for the attacker. This attack was the worst terrorist incident in New York since September 11, 2001.
Trump replied to a reporter by saying, “Send him to Gitmo. I would certainly consider that, yes.”
Obama made it a campaign promise to close the facility. A promise he never accomplished. President Obama also wanted to extend an olive branch to Cuba and this became a negotiation point. But during the election, Trump said he had different priorities. Rather than concerning himself with the harsh treatment of terrorists, his feeling is that terrorists should suffer. Right or wrong, he seems to be considering enacting this policy now.
