On a C-SPAN program this past week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) alluded to President Trump’s use of his wealth to get out of the Vietnam War draft. He said that “we drafted the lowest-income level of America, and the highest-income level found a doctor that would say that they had a bone spur. […] That is wrong. If we are going to ask every American to serve, every American should serve.” Trump himself did come from a wealthy family, and did get a bone spur deferment (possibly several). Like him or not, it’s hard to deny McCain’s fighter-hero status — serving admirably, getting fired upon, becoming a POW in a Vietnamese war camp, and leading others in that camp until they were freed. He’s won just about every military honor possible. Trump, obviously, has no such history.
Tump and McCain have had a long-standing feud, with McCain voting against Trump’s healthcare proposal, Trump saying he prefers soldiers who weren’t captured, and several angry tweets back and forth.
On Monday morning, McCain did refute the idea that he was calling Trump a “draft-dodger” though. Look below this video to see that clip.
While on The View with his daughter Meghan, the senator did say that he was not specifically calling President Trump a “draft-dodger.” He blamed the system, not the man — “I don’t consider him so much as a draft-dodger as I feel the system was so wrong that certain Americans could evade their responsibilities to serve the country.” He did, however, continue to call this action a “disgrace” and say that “nothing makes me more angry.”
