During the Obama years, the U.S. was very upset at the Egyptian president’s handling of the ousting of Mohamed Morsi. Even though the new leader, President El-Sisi, is seemingly more pro-western and pro-Israel, the Obama administration condemned him for his mass death penalty sentencing of former Morsi and Muslim Brotherhood operatives. President Trump seems to be hoping for renewed friendship between the U.S. and Egypt, inviting El-Sisi to the White House and calling him “a great friend and ally.” This is a pretty radical shift in foreign policy between Presidents Obama and Trump.
