The Ohio State University is almost as famous for its band as it is for its football team. The halftime shows are legendary and always conclude with the “Script Ohio” — an 80-year-old tradition that has the band marching to the tune of Robert Planquette’s “Le Régiment de Sambre et Meuse.”
I’m not exaggerating when I say that thousands of Ohio kids grow up dreaming they will one day be able to march with “The Best Damn Band in the Land” (TBDBITL). I was one of them, marching along the streets of our small town before I was old enough to begin playing an instrument. Alas, when it was time to make that decision I chose poorly. It turns out the band only includes brass and percussion instruments — no flutes allowed.
This two-year-old Ohio boy seems to have chosen wisely, opting for a tiny trumpet. His marching ability rivals that of some of my fellow marching band members in college. He even nails the bow at the end of the song. Check out the attention span and concentration of this wee little boy, decked out in a replica TBDBITL uniform (don’t forget to turn the volume up!):
