Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said President Donald Trump’s phone conversation with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky was a “violation of laws” that prohibit “soliciting” help from a foreign government.
Blumenthal was asked if there is an existing law he thinks Trump violated with the Ukraine call.
“The president clearly was soliciting help and assistance from a foreign government in violation of laws that prohibit that kind of soliciting or accepting aid from a foreign leader,” Blumenthal said Wednesday on Capitol Hill.
During the call with Zelensky, Trump said, “Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it — it sounds horrible to me.”
Blumenthal also said he wants the whistleblower, who reportedly works in the Intelligence Community, to testify before Congress.
Republicans such as Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) have said the president’s conversation was not an impeachable offense.
“There was no talk about holding up foreign aid from the president. Zelensky, the president of the Ukraine, said he wasn’t pushed,” Jordan told Fox News.
On Wednesday, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) called the transcript of the call “deeply troubling” but did not say whether the president committed an impeachable offense.
