Democratic Presidential Candidate on Abortion Bans: ‘We’re Losing’

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) is interviewed in Washington outside of the Supreme Court.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, said Democrats have to “get people more active” and “more engaged” in the political process to combat abortion restrictions being passed in states like Alabama because “we’re losing, quite frankly.”

“We’ve got to fund the programs that fund Planned Parenthood and get the money down into these local communities for women’s health to try to combat what’s happening, sometimes, at the state level but we’ve got to start winning elections, I mean, this is the bottom line, we’re losing elections and these guys are getting into power and this is what they do,” Ryan said after speaking at a recent “Stop the Bans” protest at the Supreme Court that was held in opposition to Alabama’s new abortion law.

“We’ve got to get people more active, more engaged, because now with the Supreme Court, what’s happened with the federal courts, because we haven’t been able to win the Senate and we haven’t been able to win the presidency. We’re losing, quite frankly. And so we’ve got to start winning elections and that’s underlying all of this that’s happening right now,” he added.
