[WATCH] Cruz Ties Trump to de Blasio: Doesn't Know What 'Great' Means

Donald Trump keeps using the word “great.” He promises yuge and “great” deals, he’ll promote the best “great” people, and, of course, he will “make America great again.” A recent ad from Ted Cruz casts doubt on whether The Donald knows what that word means.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is in the news, and it’s less than flattering. De Blasio is in the center of a major corruption scandal, and Ted Cruz knows it. What’s worse, Donald Trump endorsed de Blasio in 2013, while Ted Cruz was semi-filibustering ObamaCare on the floor of the Senate.

Cruz’s campaign took full advantage of The Donald’s foolish past, releasing an ad over the weekend on New York television, ahead of the state’s primary on Tuesday.

The ad shows newspaper clippings of de Blasio’s scandal, step by step, with Trump’s voice praising the mayor-to-be in the background. Attacks on Trump are bad enough, but it’s his own words that prove really damning.

“I think he’s a smart guy that knows what’s going on,” The Donald says. “I think he’s not going to want to destroy New York.”

Worst of all, Trump echoed his own future campaign slogan. “He’ll end up being a good mayor, maybe a very good mayor, I think he’s going to want to make New York great.”

Then the even more damning caption: “Perhaps Donald doesn’t know what the word ‘great’ means.” This conclusion is perfect, and also proves a hilarious allegory to a truly great movie.

This reminds me, and I imagine it reminds Ted Cruz, of an iconic Hollywood moment. In The Princess Bride (1987), the robber Vizzini (Wallace Shawn) keeps using the word “inconceivable,” and it’s clear he loves the word so much, he uses it when another word would express his ideas a bit better.

In a great moment, Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) turns to Vizzini and says, “You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.”

Ted Cruz loves this movie, and mentioned it in a hilarious sketch with Saturday Night Live this past weekend. When asked by Jimmy Fallon (posing as Donald Trump) if he was watching the Democratic debate, Cruz responded, “Nope. I’m watching The Princess Bride, for the eight hundred and forty-third time.”

So does Trump know what the word “great” means? I guess we’ll have to find out. Unfortunately for Cruz, it looks like The Donald will perform strongly in his home state of New York, and may even sweep all 95 delegates at stake. Unless, of course, we get a huge shift in “New York values.”
