After rising nearly 17 percent in January, major crimes in New York City rose by 22 percent in February. Police attribute the increase to the state’s lenient new bail law that allows most criminals to be released if they can prove they can’t afford bail.
There were 16,343 major crimes in the first two months of 2020 compared to 13,648 during the first two months last year. There was a 7.1% increase in shootings. robbery, assault, burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny auto crimes. The murder rate, however, fell almost 20 percent. Those arrested for murder, rape, and most violent crimes are not subject to the “no bail” law.
Coincidence? Not hardly.
During the first 58 days of 2020, 482 people who had already been arrested for committing a felony such as robbery or burglary were then rearrested for committing an additional 846 crimes.
Thirty-five percent, or 299, of those were for arrests in seven major crime categories – murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny auto.
Officials say that all of the suspects that were arrested would have usually ended up in jail prior to new bail reform laws.
The amount is triple that of those committed in the same 58 days in 2019.
The cops make it clear they know what’s making citizens less safe.
‘Criminal justice reforms serve as a significant reason New York City has seen this uptick in crime,’ the NYPD said in a press release.
‘All of people were arrested for offenses that prior to Jan 1 and bail reform, could have landed them in jail,’ the NYPD stated.
‘Each number represents a victim,’ said NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea. ‘We will continue to work hand-in-hand with New Yorkers and our law enforcement partners to zero in on the drivers of crime and deliver justice for the victims.’
Repealing the criminal justice reforms is not going to be possible. The reforms have come to be identified as a racial issue and New York Democrats don’t have the guts to take on the activists.
The Speaker has labeled anecdotal reports of repeat offenders committing crimes while awaiting trial as “misinformation.”
Some Assembly members have painted the new proposal as “racist” and assailed their counterparts in the Senate as “fake a– legislators.”
Liberal-leaning members of the Senate, including Sens. Jessica Ramos (D-Queens) and Alessandra Biaggi (D-Bronx), have appeared at anti-rollback rallies, joining advocates calling for the current laws to be kept in place.
Those “anecdotal reports” have turned into cold, hard statistics. Any reasonably aware and intelligent person knows that if you make it easy to release career criminals they aren’t suddenly going to see the light and go straight. They are simply going to commit more crimes. It’s what they do.
These aren’t “mistakes” that some people might make because of poor judgment or emotion — the argument made by bail reform advocates. Taking them off the street makes New Yorkers safer. The cops know this. Lawmakers know this. Law-abiding citizens know this.
