The Virginia Republican Party didn’t have a candidate on the ballot in 23 out of 100 House of Delegates races or 23 percent.

According to a review of the state election results from Tuesday, Democrats also didn’t face a Republican challenger in 25 percent of the State Senate races that took place.

The Democrats won control of the Senate and House of Delegates for the first time in 26 years.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, campaigned for Democrats at a “get-out-the-vote” rally in Sterling with former Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D-Va.) ahead of Tuesday’s election. Biden’s wife Jill also attended a “canvass kick-off” event for Democrats in Fairfax. Virginia Democrats also had actor Alec Baldwin campaigning throughout Northern Virginia in the final weeks before the election.
