WASHINGTON — While speaking about immigration reform, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said she doesn’t have a television and doesn’t watch cable news.
“I think one of the reasons why things tend to skew so far to the right than where people are actually at is because Fox News viewers call their elected officials all the time like they do it with their breakfast or something, like, even in my office, I literally — I don’t have a TV. I don’t watch cable news but I always know what Fox is talking about the day before because of the phone calls that come into my office,” Ocasio-Cortez said on Monday at an immigration forum where she discussed her support for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“It’s a real thing in that there’s a real difference between an engaged base and an unengaged base. I think sometimes we really allow our cynicism to distort our perceptions of our own power and so always ask these questions. Ask what are you doing for our immigrant community everywhere. Always ask those questions. Bring them up. Have those conversations and coming from the perspective of an organizer is knowing how to have those conversations with people,” she added.
