The Morning Briefing: No SOTU, New Caravan and Much, Much More

Good Thursday morning.

Here is what’s on the president’s agenda today:

  • The president participates in the Missile Defense Review announcement at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va.
  • President Trump receives his intelligence briefing

Georgia man arrested for terror plot, wanting to attack White House

Maybe certain people need to tone down their anti-Trump rhetoric, eh? Say, isn’t CNN in Georgia?

A Georgia man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a plot to attack the White House with an armor-piercing rocket and explosive devices, US Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia BJay Pak said.

Pak told reporters at a media briefing that Hasher Jallal Taheb, 21, planned to attack the White House using devices that included homemade explosives and an “anti-tank rocket.”

According to a criminal complaint, Taheb said the plan was to blow a hole in the White House with an AT4 then attack inside the building with semi-automatic rifles. He was going to wear a backpack with a homemade bomb in it and expected to become a martyr, the court document alleges. He expected two other people, who were actually an FBI undercover agent and an FBI confidential source, would join him in the attack, prosecutors said.

Wow, this guy sounds like a Women’s March headliner.

Nancy wants Trump to cancel the SOTU

Claiming there are security threats because of the government shutdown, the Speaker of the House suggested Trump deliver written remarks instead of a full-blown, pomp and circumstance-y State of the Union address. In reality, only a fraction of the government is “shut down,” and apparently no other branch of government had heard anything about security concerns, according to DHS.

“Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th,” Pelosi wrote.

“Our letter is clear about what our concerns are. Just read the letter again, okay?” Pelosi, D-Calif., said. “It’s about security.”

Should Trump listen to her and deliver written remarks? Or maybe he should deliver the SOTU from a boat on the Rio Grande? What do you think?

Another caravan is heading to the U.S.

Roughly 2,000 people from Honduras are marching to the U.S.-Mexico border. I expect more and more people will be joining them as they march, so we are looking at thousands and thousands of people lining up at the border. Some of the Mexicans who live near the border are not happy about this latest group of American hopefuls.

“People of Honduras, all of you who are spinning these grand illusions and getting ready to come on this caravan and in any future others, before you leave your country, please inform yourself about how people who’ve already come on previous caravans are faring in Tijuana,” said Belem Gonzales.

“Mexico is just like your country,” Gonzales added. “There are many problems and needs, and you’re not going to be much better off than you were in Honduras. Please don’t trust these manipulative agitators who are encouraging you to risk everything for nothing.”

Luis Mendez was far more unwelcoming. “We do not want caravans of (emojis of rats). Fight conditions in your own country. You are not welcome here.”
