House Republicans have called U.S. Attorney John Huber to appear before Congress and give testimony on his investigation into the Clinton Foundation, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) told The Hill on Tuesday.
Former attorney general Jeff Sessions reportedly tasked Huber with probing alleged wrongdoing by the Clinton Foundation, the Uranium One scandal, and Obama-era surveillance abuses in November of 2017, and Republicans are keen to get an update from the attorney before Democrats take the House back in January.
Meadows, who is chairman of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Government Operations, told The Hill that it’s time to “circle back” specifically to Huber’s investigation into the Clinton Foundation.
“Mr. [John] Huber with the Department of Justice and the FBI has been having an investigation – at least part of his task was to look at the Clinton Foundation and what may or may not have happened as it relates to improper activity with that charitable foundation, so we’ve set a hearing date for December the 5th,” he said.
Republicans plan to dig into several areas of concern, including “whether any tax-exempt proceeds for personal gain and whether the Foundation complied with IRS laws.”
“Huber’s work has remained shrouded in mystery,” The Hill reports, which is putting it mildly. Republicans began voicing concern over the summer when it became known that Huber, who is supposed to be probing alleged DOJ and FBI surveillance abuse during and after the 2016 presidential election, hadn’t even interviewed key Justice Department officials involved in the scandal.
During an appearance on Fox News in August, Washington, D.C. attorney Victoria Toensing of diGenova & Toensing expressed shock that Huber had not spoken with Bruce Ohr or Nellie Ohr. Even worse, he hasn’t contacted her client Doug Campbell, the FBI whistleblower in the Uranium One case.
“Now, how can you even evaluate those two issues without talking to those three people?! It’s a sham! — it’s a Potemkin Village! It’s a Potemkin investigation! I’m appalled!” she exclaimed at the time.
Sessions announced in March of 2018 that he had appointed Huber to investigate the scandals and Meadows said the committee thinks it’s high time Huber gives an update to Congress about his findings.
The congressman said the committee is also trying to secure testimonies from whistleblowers who could have more information about potential Clinton Foundation improprieties.
“We’re just now starting to work with a couple of whistleblowers that would indicate that there is a great probability of significant improper activity that’s happening in and around the Clinton Foundation,” he said.
