Two Killed in Shooting at Lackland Air Force Base

Lackland Air Force Base outside San Antonio was put on lockdown after a shooting with victims was reported at the facility.

“There is a real world active shooter situation at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Medina Annex and base and local authorities are on the scene at this time,” Joint Base San Antonio reported on its Facebook page at about 9:30 a.m. local time.

“JBSA-Lackland is currently on lockdown. All schools and child development centers are currently locked down and there have been no injuries confirmed at this time. Any suspicious or threatening activity should be reported to Security Forces immediately by calling 9-1-1,” the statement continued. “More details will be released as they become available.”

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office tweeted shortly after the base statement that there are two dead.

Local media reported that sheriff’s sources said there could be more victims. Others indicated it may have been a murder-suicide.

The FBI field office in San Antonio tweeted that it was “responding to assist a reported Active Shooter even at Lackland AFB. Only assisting at this time. No further information.”

UPDATE 1 p.m. EST: The base has confirmed two people were killed today at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Medina Annex.

“There are no indications that this was a terrorist attack,” the base said in a news release. “Base first responders and local authorities have contained the incident and an investigation of the incident is underway.”

Names of the deceased were not being released pending notification of next of kin.

A senior official who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity said an airman shot his commander, then killed himself.

Brig. Gen. Robert LaBrutta said two handguns were found on the floor by the bodies of the men.
