Yesterday evening, Reince Priebus (Donald Trump’s chief of staff and former head of the RNC), Donald Trump, and Mitt Romney had a nice, cozy dinner together at Jean-Georges restaurant inside of Trump International Hotel & Tower in New York. The three men spoke with each other for several hours.
The reason Romney went is clear: He desperately wants to become Donald Trump’s secretary of State. Normally, that would certainly be a great position for the former Massachusetts governor, but it smacks of rank hypocrisy that he’s willing to serve in Trump’s cabinet. After all, he may very well have been Trump’s harshest critic during the primaries and afterward.
After all, only a few weeks ago Romney said that Trump’s “domestic policies would lead to recession.” With regards to the president-elect’s foreign policy, Romney wasn’t exactly positive and hopeful either:
His foreign policies would make America and the world less safe.
Which is why he concluded:
He has neither the temperament nor the judgment to be president and his personal qualities would mean that America would cease to be a shining city on a hill.
Suddenly that has all changed. Instead of blasting the soon-to-be president, Romney now praises him in ways Sean Hannity would be proud of:
Emerging from the dinner, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee seemed to address those concerns, noting pointedly that Trump had done something he had been unable to do: win.
“By the way, it’s not easy, winning,” Romney said. “I know that myself. He did something I tried to do and was unsuccessful in. He won the general election.”
The man who Romney once denounced as divisive and dangerous now carries a “message of inclusion and bringing people together.”
Isn’t it wonderful? So much love where, before, so much hate existed. It’s almost… inspiring.
Or not, of course.
The reason it is anything but inspiring is this: Trump hasn’t changed one bit. Just look at his Twitter account. He’s still trolling people and, when he considers it necessary, bullying them to get his way. Absolutely nothing has changed.
Well, except for one minor detail: He has won. And that means that it’s up to him to give away nice jobs to former politicians in search of a new high-paying and highly respectable job. If that means they have to grovel and beg to convince Trump to throw them a bone, they’ll do it.
Of course, none of this should surprise us. Romney is the ultimate politician, which means he’s willing to do whatever it takes — even blast himself — just so people have to call him “Mr. Secretary.”
