Democrats in Congress Are Even More Out of Touch on Voter ID Than We Thought

In Congress, Democrats have been lockstep in opposition to the SAVE America Act, a bill that requires proof of citizenship to register to vote and a valid photo ID to vote in federal elections. It’s commonsense election integrity, and polls have shown widespread support for the legislation and its key components. Yet, it’s stalled in the Senate because, as Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) loves to say, it’s “Jim Crow 2.0.”

The problem with that argument is that no one actually believes it.

Earlier this year, Pew Research Center found that 83% of Americans favor voter ID requirements, including wide majorities of Democrats, independents, whites, blacks, and Latinos. Gallup found 84% support voter ID, with 98% of Republicans, 84% of independents, and 67% of Democrats on board, while 83% also back proof of citizenship for voter registration. Rasmussen Reports put support at 75%, a number that has climbed steadily for a decade. A Harvard-Harris poll found 71% support for the SAVE America Act itself, including 69% of independents and half of rank-and-file Democrats.

You literally can’t get more mainstream and uncontroversial than the SAVE America Act. Yet, Democrats are blocking it like their power depends on it failing. Democrats in Congress are so out of the mainstream on this issue that even socialists support it.

I know, shocking, right? But it’s true.

A new Fox News poll found that 66% of self-described socialists back voter ID. That’s on top 83% of all voters supporting requiring photo ID to register and 77% support requiring photo ID to actually cast a ballot. Break down the Democrat numbers, and the party's own voters aren't with their leadership either: 72% support photo ID to register, and 62% support it to vote.

Think about this and the implications here. Socialists, a demographic that agrees with Republicans on almost nothing, support voter ID, but Democrats in Congress do not. Support for voter ID has held remarkably steady in polling for more than a decade, no matter who asks the question or how it's worded.

"Even socialists think voter ID is common sense, yet Democrat politicians keep blocking the SAVE America Act and attacking election safeguards because they know they can't win fair and square," said Ally Triolo, the RNC's election integrity communications director. "American elections are for American citizens only, and the RNC is fighting to keep it that way."

Make no mistake about it: when your position is too extreme for people who want to nationalize the means of production, close prisons, abolish the Senate, abolish the presidency, grant mass amnesty, close the Pentagon, and abolish the police, the argument is already lost.

So what do Democrats in Congress know that virtually every demographic in America, including socialists, apparently doesn't? Nothing. They just know voter ID makes it a lot harder to cheat, and cheating is the only way some of them plan on winning.
