The controversy over the White House ballroom was, in every possible way, pretty darn stupid. Past administrations had been talking about such a project for years, and it was embarrassing to hold state dinners in temporary tents and expect dignitaries to use porta-potties. But somehow, the left managed to outdo itself with its faux outrage theatre with their complaining about Trump fixing the reflecting pool on the National Mall.
Seriously, if you needed more proof that the left will complain about everything and anything President Donald Trump does, this ends the debate.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum appeared before Congress on Wednesday and found himself — again — having to explain why fixing a deteriorating, algae-ridden, structurally failing reflecting pool on the National Mall is actually a good idea. The amount of time lawmakers have spent on this topic apparently surprised even Burgum himself.
"It's surprising to me the reflecting pool has come up so many different times during this thing," he said.
I hear ya, Doug. But here we are.
The pool was, by any reasonable measure, a disaster. According to Burgum, 40,000 gallons of water were leaking out every single day. Broken chlorine lines. Algae blooms. Two and a half miles of rotting seam material — the stuff that holds the expansion joints together at the base — all of it had to go. This was not a presidential whim. This was a structure falling apart in slow motion, in front of 47 million visitors a year on the most photographed stretch of ground in America.
Oh, but the American Flag Blue color coating is the issue!
Critics took one look at the blue color coating chosen for the pool's base and started mocking it. "I say I don't call it mocking — maybe it's just misunderstanding about the color," Burgum said. "The color American flag blue is meant to enhance the reflectivity. It's called the reflecting pool. It's not a 'look to the bottom and see how deep it is' pool. It's a reflecting pool."
He went further, pointing out that this isn't some novel aesthetic decision cooked up by the Trump administration. The pool actually had a black asphalt base at one point in its history. Dark bases are standard in the reflecting pool and fountain design world precisely because they make surfaces more reflective. The navy blue carries patriotic symbolism too — same as the American flag. "I think when it's completed people are going to see that," Burgum said.

And then there's the broader pattern he's clearly tired of addressing. Every time this administration prioritizes improving Washington, D.C. infrastructure — cleaning it up, securing it, making it presentable for the nation's 250th anniversary — the word "vanity" gets thrown around. Burgum called that out plainly: "The idea that somehow — everybody wanted to have a clean, safe, and beautiful Washington D.C., but if this president makes it a priority and personally says we're going to get it done for our 250th, then the word 'vanity' gets inserted."
The reflecting pool controversy is the low-budget sequel to the ballroom controversy. But, Burgum noted that Trump himself will barely benefit from it. "He'll never even get to use it. It's going to come for every president that comes after us." The argument that modernizing the White House's convening space for heads of state and securing the facilities beneath it constitutes some kind of ego project is just stupid.
"It's surprising to me the Reflecting Pool has come up so many different times," says @SecretaryBurgum in response to TDS-afflicted Democrats on Capitol Hill.

He reached back into history to make the point stick. FDR oversaw reconstruction at the White House before World War II. Teddy Roosevelt tore down existing structures to build the West Wing. "Were those vanity projects?" Burgum asked. "No, they're still helping the nation today."
So, please... can we just move on to the next stupid thing Democrats will complain about?
