The Real White House Renovation Scandal

The White House

If you need proof that the left will clutch their pearls over anything Donald Trump does, the ongoing renovations at the White House are a prime example. Since the demolition of the covered driveway at the East Wing took place for the new ballroom, Democrats have been flipping out, calling it sacrilegious. You’d think he was renting out the Lincoln Bedroom to donors, the way the talking heads are carrying on.

But here’s what they conveniently leave out: The ballroom is being privately funded — not a single taxpayer dollar involved. And far from being “sacrilegious,” it’s just the latest in a century-long tradition of White House improvements. The only real scandal here is how predictably unhinged the left becomes whenever Trump dares to make America’s house a little grander.

Presidents have been expanding and renovating the White House since Theodore Roosevelt built the West Wing in 1902. William Howard Taft added the Oval Office in 1909. Franklin D. Roosevelt built an indoor swimming pool and expanded both wings. Harry Truman practically rebuilt the entire White House from the inside out in 1948. Nixon added the press room and a bowling alley. Barack Obama even turned the tennis court into a full basketball court, and was there for a two-year massive upgrade project that cost taxpayers $375 million.

Funny how none of those projects caused “constitutional crises” on CNN.

Now, Trump is adding a ballroom — something many presidents have considered but never followed through on — and he’s doing it the right way: privately funded, modern, and in keeping with the building’s history. It’s a sensible improvement to the People’s House, but because Trump’s the one doing it, the left can’t resist the fake outrage. The double standard couldn’t be clearer—when Democrats renovate, it’s “historic preservation.” When Trump does it, it’s suddenly “authoritarian architecture.”

And, frankly, it’s long overdue. Trump says the space is needed for large functions, and he’s right.

Let’s not pretend that if Obama built this ballroom, the media would be shedding tears and Democrats would be up in arms. Of course they wouldn’t. The left just can’t help itself. Their default response to anything Trump does is to oppose it, scandalize it, and call it a crisis.

And I think the media is catching on. On Wednesday, The Hill published a report noting that the ballroom project isn’t unprecedented.

“President Trump’s construction of a grand ballroom attached to the White House — starting with the demolition of part of the East Wing this week — will not be the first time a president has left a lasting mark on the people’s house,” the report began. “Presidents from Teddy Roosevelt to Barack Obama have remade parts of the building to their liking. And Harry Truman oversaw a major modernization of the White House, built in 1792.”

That’s the real scandal — not that Trump is improving the White House, but that the left has become so consumed by its hatred of him that it must invent outrage where none exists. Every nail Trump hammers, every policy he signs, every word he speaks becomes the next “crisis” to hyperventilate over.

The ballroom itself isn’t controversial. What’s truly embarrassing is the left’s obsession with turning routine presidential actions into moral catastrophes when Trump does it. Democrats' nonstop hysteria says far more about their own derangement than it does about Trump’s leadership.
