Here's Why Trump Whataboutism Fails to Deflect Biden's Decline

Democrats have been questioning Donald Trump’s mental fitness since the day he came down the escalator in 2015, pushing baseless narratives about the 25th Amendment, calling for cognitive tests, and amplifying armchair diagnoses from partisan psychiatrists—despite zero evidence of any actual impairment.

Yet when Joe Biden’s obvious cognitive decline became impossible to ignore during his presidency, Democrats didn’t reassess—they deflected. Instead of addressing Biden’s rambling speeches, vacant stares, and scripted photo ops, they leaned into tired whataboutism, recycling the same debunked attacks on Trump in a desperate attempt to muddy the waters.

And they’re still doing it today.

During a fiery exchange on “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” host Piers Morgan clashed with former “Meet The Press” host Chuck Todd over the coverup of Biden’s cognitive decline—and made quick work of Todd’s attempt at deflection by turning the focus to Trump.

“I do think the media are culpable too,” Morgan said, pointing out that if the roles were reversed, coverage would be far more aggressive. “If it had been Trump, there would have been an absolute frenzy to get to the bottom of any cognitive issues, if he was face planting.”

Chuck Todd, clearly defensive, jumped in with a classic whataboutism. “Is there a frenzy now though, Piers?” he asked. “If I told you our president doesn’t sleep at night and instead tweets crazy stuff in the middle of the night, would you wonder if there was cognitive decline?”

Morgan tried to respond, but Todd continued interrupting. “Are [the press] correctly covering this guy’s manic behavior?” Todd added, referencing Trump’s past behavior, while dodging the subject of Biden entirely.

At that point, Morgan had enough.

“I’ve known Trump 20 years and he’s behaved in this kind of way the entire time I’ve known him… He used to behave like that in ‘The Apprentice’ boardroom.”

Todd attempted to equate that explanation to what Biden’s defenders offering similar defenses.

Morgan didn’t flinch. “Here’s the difference then, Chuck,” he said. “Trump makes himself always available. He’s always doing two-hour rally speeches. He’s doing endless huddles with the press, endless interviews.”

Todd pushed back again, asking, “But if the words are crazy, does that make it better?”

Morgan laid out the distinction clearly. “I think it’s a different kind of thing. You could say that Trump’s a bit crazy, but I don’t think you see evidence of cognitive decline. There’s not a lot of difference between Trump now than there was the first time round in 2016 or 2017. To me, watching him, I just think he’s the same guy.”

Todd begrudgingly conceded a sliver of Morgan’s point: “Just a little bit, he is moving slower, but yeah.”

But by that point, the damage to Todd’s argument was done. Piers Morgan had effectively dismantled the lazy comparisons between Trump’s personality quirks and Biden’s visible decline. The reality is clear: Trump’s still the same high-energy figure he was years ago. Biden, on the other hand, can barely make it through a scripted speech without raising eyebrows—and no amount of media spin or deflection can change that. You can dislike Trump’s tone or tactics, but there’s never been any credible evidence of mental decline. The same can’t be said for Joe Biden. And yet, the left keeps trying—desperately—to pretend these two men are somehow the same.
