The Democrats' Stand Against Cutting Waste Could Haunt Them in 2028

The recent initiatives from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and President Donald Trump aimed at exposing government waste and fraud have faced the expected wall of resistance from the Democrats. Once again they have proven they are willing to oppose anything that comes from Trump, regardless of how obviously beneficial—or necessary—it might be, even if it’s something they’ve supported before.

One of the more glaring consequences of the exposure of wasteful federal spending is job losses in roles that are the epitome of government inefficiency. Take, for instance, the recent firings at Yosemite National Park, where the sole locksmith—yes, you read that right—was let go. His unique role was to hold the keys to locked restrooms, making him a rather peculiar necessity when most locks could probably benefit from a little more common sense in design rather than having a dedicated human being assigned to their upkeep.

“At California’s Yosemite National Park, the Trump administration fired the only locksmith on staff on Friday,” the Washington Post reported. “He was the sole employee with the keys and the institutional knowledge needed to rescue visitors from locked restrooms.”

Go ahead and facepalm if you like.

The Democrats have consistently responded to Trump’s initiatives with kneejerk reactions, and they haven’t yet figured out how foolish their opposition sounds. It’s hard to maintain credibility when you're defending questionable government spending practices, and in the process, they create self-inflicted political damage. If that’s what they want to do, I guess that’s up to them. The same party that used to be all about border security flipped when Trump first ran for president, and then it was Joe Biden’s hubris in being the anti-Trump president that resulted in immigration being a net-positive issue for Trump and the Republican Party in 2024.

Will the same thing happen in 2028?

Were Democrats really expecting the American people to rally behind the notion of needing a full-time locksmith? The absurdity is almost too rich to digest.

Let’s reflect on this locksmith—an individual solely dedicated to providing access when someone accidentally locks themselves in a restroom. If such emergencies at Yosemite are so rampant that we require a dedicated employee to manage access, perhaps we should redirect our focus on switching to a better-designed lock rather than hiring jobs that come with such impractical responsibilities. This situation exemplifies a broader issue within federal staffing and budget management: how have we allowed such bizarre roles to thrive?

This bureaucratic penchant for creating excessive roles showcases not only a lack of oversight but a stunning disconnect from reality, suggesting that the Democrats are okay with this form and every form of inefficiency—because, at this point, it isn’t a hill they should die on. But die they will—on every hill imaginable in their persistent quest to resist Trump and his agenda.

In the private sector, such waste would never survive. Quick decisions, accountability, and a sense of practicality are typically the order of the day. But here we are—caught in a system where both parties have contributed to this ineffective chaos, yet only Democrats remain steadfastly loyal to the status quo of government spending.

It seems clear: Democrats are more intent on defending the indefensible than recognizing the necessary reforms needed in our government practices. If they keep this up, their opposition to cutting government waste and making government more efficient will do for the GOP in 2028 what their opposition to border security did for them in 2024.
