If Only the Country Listened to Joe Lieberman

I was shocked upon learning the news earlier this week that former Sen. Joe Lieberman had passed away. To be honest, I hadn’t given him much thought in long time, yet, the news was kind of sad nevertheless. You wouldn’t normally expect me to eulogize a liberal but, let’s face it, had Americans listened to him, our country would be in a much better place right now.

In 2008, Sen. Joe Lieberman took the unconventional step of endorsing Republican John McCain over Barack Obama in the presidential election. “Being a Republican is important. Being a Democrat is important. But you know what’s more important than that? The interest and well-being of the United States of America.”

It was a bold move that required conviction and integrity. He was putting country before party, and he even attacked Obama during his keynote speech at the Republican National Convention.

"In the Senate, during the three-and-a-half years that Senator Obama has been a member, he has not reached across party lines to get accomplish anything significant, nor has he been willing to take on powerful interest groups in the Democratic Party to get something done,” Lieberman said.

“Eloquence is no substitute for a record — not in these tough times,” he observed.

And boy was he right. Despite being a Democrat, he knew Barack Obama was dangerous.

Despite polling and my general lack of enthusiasm for John McCain, I had faith that Americans wouldn’t put Barack Obama in the Oval Office. A man that inexperienced and radical couldn’t possibly be rewarded with the highest office in the land. It was no small thing for a man who had been the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee a mere eight years earlier to be willing to speak out against him, and I’d convinced myself that the public would see it. Even now, I think the damage Barack Obama did to this country was far worse than anyone could have imagined.

During Obama’s presidency, the Democratic Party underwent a significant leftward shift. Once proponents of border security and upholding the law, Democrats became unabashed advocates for open borders and sanctuary cities. Obama allowed Russia to acquire 20 percent of America's uranium mining capabilities, and unilaterally (and unconstitutionally) signed the Iran nuclear deal, which not only funneled billions to the world’s biggest state sponsor of terrorism but gave them a path to obtaining nuclear weapons.

And I’ve only scratched the surface of the evils and failures of Obama’s presidency.  Obama's social agenda left a lasting imprint, with initiatives like Obamacare, DACA, and the mainstreaming of transgender ideology defining his legacy. Since assuming office, Joe Biden has only built upon those foundations. Biden's ability to expand Obamacare or reinforce DACA is directly indebted to Obama's prior actions. It was Obama who unilaterally reinterpreted Title IX to include "gender identity," thereby mandating schools to accommodate transgender students' needs, including access to facilities like bathrooms and locker rooms — accelerating this destructive social agenda that is victimizing children.

Much of Biden's agenda has been a restoration or continuation of the Obama-era status quo, albeit with exacerbations. However, it was Obama who first laid the groundwork. Joe Lieberman may not have been successful in convincing Americans that Obama was too dangerous to be our nation’s top elected official but he tried, at great personal and professional risk.
