Oops! Democrat Messaging on January 6 Appears To Be Backfiring

Townhall Media

The Democrats are still obsessed with January 6. They talk about it as if it were yesterday, pretending that it was an insurrection led by Donald Trump, despite all the evidence that it was no such thing, using it as a pretext to get him removed from the ballot in states nationwide, and using it as their main theme for the 2024 election.

Why? They're afraid of Donald Trump, and they think this messaging works. But it's not working.

But, I'll get to that in a minute.

On Friday, Joe Biden gave a speech marking the anniversary of the January 6 Capitol riot, spouting the usual inflammatory and false rhetoric.  "He told the crowd to fight like hell. And all hell was unleashed," Biden said of the 2021 attack. "Then as usual he left the dirty work to others. He retreated to the White House."

What Trump actually told his supporters was to engage in peaceful protest. “I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard,” Trump said in his speech.

Not that the truth matters. To the left, Trump is guilty of insurrection. Of course, if that were the case, then why hasn't Trump ever been charged with sedition or participating in an insurrection? Because all evidence shows that these allegations are baseless. Not only did Trump specifically call on his supporters to protest peacefully, he was still speaking when the violence at the Capitol began, and there’s also ample evidence that various groups preplanned the riot.

The facts are irrelevant to the left, and they continue to push this issue because, well, what else do they have? So they had their biased investigation, with its handpicked committee members who cherrypicked and manipulated evidence, and even that wasn’t enough. While it’s very likely focus group testing has told them to keep pushing the tired talking point that “democracy is under attack” and that the Capitol riot was an insurrection, their rhetoric isn’t convincing the public.

According to a new Suffolk University/USA Today poll, sympathy for the January 6 rioters is surging.

“The survey, which was completed shortly before the third anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of President Trump, showed sympathy for the rioters has increased among the voting public over the past several years,” explained Suffolk. “Only 48% of voters overall said they thought the rioters were ‘criminals,’ a significant drop from the 70% of voters who thought so in a Suffolk survey conducted just weeks after the attacks. Those who agreed that ‘they went too far, but they had a point’ rose to 37% from 24%, and 6% called their actions ‘appropriate,’ when in 2021 just 2% did."

Heck, Democrats don’t even have a real advantage on the issue of which party is a bigger threat to democracy. When it comes to fears for the future of “our democracy,” there is concern on both sides, but for different reasons. "More than eight in ten voters (83%) said they worry about threats to democracy in the United States. Top responses about the greatest threat included Donald Trump (18%), government corruption/dysfunction (10%), and immigration/open borders (8%),” Suffolk’s analysis of the survey explains. "Asked which party is more responsible for threatening democracy, 40% of respondents said Democrats and 40% said Republicans."

In short, after three years of Democrats repeating the same tired and bogus talking points, the public is becoming more sympathetic to the January 6 rioters, not less.

Great job, Democrats.
