Trump unveils school safety/gun control plan

The Trump administration revealed its school safety and gun control plan on Sunday evening.

President Trump on Sunday unveiled a school-safety plan that seeks to steer military vets and retired cops into the educational system — and provide firearms training for “specially qualified” school personnel.

Trump also called on Congress to pass pending legislation to strengthen instant, federal background checks on gun buyers, and earmark $50 million annually for technology and other programs to prevent school violence.

Other proposals include having every state follow Florida’s lead in allowing judges to issue “extreme risk protection orders” so cops can seize guns and ammunition from people who pose a threat to themselves or others.

The plan did not include raising the minimum age to purchase a long gun to 21.

The proposal did include the creation of a Federal Commission on School Safety, run by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

The commission plans to focus on several areas, including age restrictions for certain firearm purchases; current entertainment rating systems; youth consumption of violent entertainment; best practices for school building and campus security and threat assessment and violence prevention; plans for integration and coordination of federal resources to help prevent and mitigate shootings at schools; and opportunities to improve access to mental health treatment, including through efforts to raise awareness of mental illness and the effectiveness of treatment.

I like this idea: anti-gun localities should be able to disarm their police, in schools, courthouses, and banks –and disarm bodyguards for politicians and celebrities etc. Let’s see how that works.

Betsy DeVos to review Obama-era education policy

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was interviewed on “60 Minutes” last night. I had no idea that show was still on, but it is. DeVos told Lesley Stahl the administration is reviewing Obama’s school discipline policy.

“We are studying that rule. We need to ensure that all students have an opportunity to learn in a safe and nurturing environment. And all students means all students,” DeVos told Stahl.

Stahl reacted, “Yeah but let’s say there’s a disruption in the classroom and a bunch of whites kids are disruptive and they get punished, you know, go see the principal, but the black kids are, you know, they call in the cops. I mean, that’s the issue: who and how the kids who disrupt are being punished.”

Partisan hack Stahl pressured De Vos and asked her if having a discipline policy was really just institutionalized racism.

“Do you see this disproportion in discipline for the same infraction as institutional racism?” quacked Stahl.

What is Stahl talking about? Is she suggesting that having a disciplinary policy in schools to deter or remove disruptive and dangerous students is actual racism? Lady, that’s how we got the Parkland shooter.

However, more evidence has emerged showing accused Stoneman Douglas Shooter Nikolas Cruz was reported to have multiple red flags raised about him over the years that became so serious, by high school some teachers did not want to be in a classroom alone with him, The Boston Globe reported.

I hope the DOE trashes this Obama policy menacing students across the nation.

Democrat party trying to control nutter candidates

My “sky is falling” fellow politicos always ask me if I am worried the GOP will lose the House in a “blue wave.” I think it’s too early to predict but I always remind this crowd that the Democrats are going to have to run extreme candidates because the #resistance is trying to take control of the party. And an extreme candidate is not going to fly in most congressional districts. The DNC doesn’t have much money— and the money is going to the fringe lefty groups. Those are the groups that will control the candidates. ABC News has a story that just warms my cold, libertarian heart.

Campaign tactics by Democratic officials to ensure the party retakes control of the House this fall have sparked complaints from some candidates about the interference and led to growing concerns the heavy-handed moves could backfire.

The dynamic was dramatically apparent in Tuesday’s Texas’ 7th Congressional District primary — where an acrimonious showdown garnered national attention after the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) published opposition research on Democratic candidate Laura Moser.

But a similar pattern is emerging in several key House races throughout the country – contests the party needs to win to help them flip the 24 seats necessary to retake control of the House of Representatives.

And the new #resistance candidates are not happy with the interference.

Younger Democrats “think the party doesn’t necessarily know what it’s doing and they have 2016 as their evidence and are being more vocal any time the DCCC or Democratic leaders try to squeeze out new, fresh voices because they don’t think the status quo is working,” Zelizer said. “Many voters don’t want to be told who they should be voting for and many outsider candidates don’t want to hear that they shouldn’t be able to fully compete.”

Part of the organization’s interference during this year’s midterm elections is due to the sizable number of candidates running for office – a record number of them new to politics.

Fresh new voices…indeed. Keep your eye on the primaries. This drama is going to play out all over America.
