The Circus, a 2016 Campaign Documentary on Showtime, Is a Must-See

Showtime is running a documentary series called The Circus that goes behind the scenes of the 2016 presidential primary process. If you’re politically inclined, you will enjoy it; it’s fairly non-partisan. The description of the series on Showtime’s website reads:

Come one, come all to THE CIRCUS: INSIDE THE GREATEST POLITICAL SHOW ON EARTH. This documentary series pulls back the curtain on the 2016 presidential race, revealing the intense, inspiring and infuriating stories behind the headlines. Key characters and events from the individual campaigns are presented in real time, as they are happening. Produced in cooperation with Bloomberg Politics, THE CIRCUS is a non-partisan, never-before-attempted take on what promises to be one of the most fascinating and consequential elections in modern history.

The show is hosted by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann of Bloomberg Politics, along with GOP strategist Mark McKinnon. The three men go behind the scenes of the campaigns in many of the primary states and give the viewer a look at the other side of the process. The show airs once a week on Sunday, recapping the week’s campaign activities. The turnaround on the show is pretty impressive.

All the candidates and their families are accessible and interact with the team … except Hillary. No surprise there.

One of my favorite scenes from the documentary took place two weeks ago: a meeting of GOP bigwigs in the proverbial “smoky back room,” discussing the fact that Donald Trump looks unstoppable.

Watch on the next page.

If you have Showtime, it’s worth 30 minutes a week to watch.
