Unicorns. They’re all the rage right now. Apparently the trend began accidentally when Miami-based blogger and food stylist, Adeline Weigh, added beet juice to food. The Daily Meal reports:
“Ever since I realized that adding beet juice to food would turn it into the most magnificent shade of hot pink, I was hooked,” Waugh told Vogue. “My goal is to take healthy food and make it fun and exciting, brightening it up with a few (or many) pops of color.”
According to Waugh, she never intended to start a food trend, nor link it to the magical creature.
“I posted it, and all my followers started saying it looked like a unicorn, so I said you’re right, and I started calling it that too,” Waugh told The New York Times. “Then all of a sudden all these people were making it and tagging it, and now the unicorn thing has gotten just insane.”
But now that rainbows and unicorns are impossible to avoid, people are either loving the trend—or absolutely hating it. There have even been some oddly volatile incidents reported, including at Starbucks, where the Unicorn Frappuccino has perhaps taken the whole movement a bit too damned far.
So if you love everything unicorn, or love to hate it, here are some ways you can bring bright, unnatural colors to a food near you.
Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino

Obviously, we have to include (and begin) this crazy train with this week’s hottest drink (which is, ironically, a cold drink). It’s pretty, alright, but apparently far too sweet to be good for anyone’s insulin levels. And it’ll set you back at least $5. If you want to partake in this one, you might just be better off Googling images of it or watching YouTube videos of people drinking them. It would be cheaper, and possibly more enjoyable since you’ll probably want to toss it after a sip or two.
Unicorn Hot Chocolate

If you need a (sugary) activity to do with your kids, this might be an option. You’re basically using white hot chocolate, turning it pink, and decorating it in colorful everything until you want to vomit rainbows.
Unicorn Cheesecake Dip

Now I can absolutely get behind anything cheesecake. Really. And if I close my eyes, I might even be able to get behind this one. When you take graham crackers and dip them into a wonderful mixture of cream cheese, yogurt, sugar, and vanilla, guess what? Cheesecake! Oh yeah, don’t forget to add all the food coloring in your pantry.
Unicorn Spa Jar

Ok, this isn’t food, but it’s colorful and sparkly. With unicorn bath bombs, foot soaks, and soaps (plus lip balm and rainbow gum, of course), you’ll be ready to put Rainbow Brite to shame.
Unicorn Poop Meringues

I think I need to reconsider my life choices, since I actually just wrote the words “unicorn poop,” but so it goes. Yes, this is a thing. Meringues are fine and all, but why not make them every color of the rainbow? Because obviously when unicorns poop, it’s wonderfully pretty and cheerful. Changing my kids’ diapers might be mildly more pleasant if they pooped rainbows too. Or it would mean an immediate need to see a doctor. Either way.
Rainbow Chex Mix

I don’t know why anyone felt the need to go and ruin a perfectly good snack like Chex Mix, but now you too can add rainbows to it! It involves all sorts of sugar and sweet additions, so if you like Chex Mix salty, you might want to skip this one.
