The wait for season seven of Game of Thrones could be longer than expected.
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss revealed that production on the HBO fantasy drama is going to start later than expected. The duo, who made the remarks during a UFC podcast, said production is waiting for gloomy weather to return in a bid to capture the gloomy weather that comes with the “Winter is here” moment revealed in the season six finale.
“We don’t have an air date yet,” the duo said. “We’re starting a bit later because at the end of this season, ‘Winter is here’ — and that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes anymore. So we kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, gray weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot.”
This may be a blessing in disguise for hardcore fans. The show is nearing its end, probably wrapping up with two truncated seasons. This delay will just help it not go as quickly. Now we will all have to wait longer to see if all of the “hint-hint” predictions about Sansa not being thrilled with her half-brother being King in the North are true (I’m skeptical, they’re all hinting a little too much).
Let us also not forget the “Game of Thrones” is still HBO’s biggest draw, so it behooves the network to make it hang around as long as possible to attract subscribers. That’s even more important now that it is finally moving into the streaming wars with stand-alone platforms. I have been using the HBO Now channel on Roku and it is absolutely awful, like something from 2001. However, GoT keeps me hooked.
