Mark Zuckerberg to Take Two Months of Paternity Leave

Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expecting his second child with his physician wife, Priscilla Chan. Zuckerberg recently posted his paternity leave plans for when his little girl is born later this year. When his first daughter, Maxima (Max), was born in November of 2015, Zuck took two months off to bond with his baby. (Facebook’s policy allows for a 4-month parental leave.) This time around, the expecting daddy will take one month at the time of the birth, and then another month in December. Separating leave into chunks like this has become an option for which many parents opt as more companies embrace and offer parental leave.

In his post, Zuckerberg wrote:

At Facebook, we offer four months of maternity and paternity leave because studies show that when working parents take time to be with their newborns, it’s good for the entire family. And I’m pretty sure the office will still be standing when I get back.

While Zuckerberg is with his family, Facebook will be left in the hands of Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and Chief Financial Officer David Wehner. They are the next highest-ranking executives at the social media giant.

Currently, “[t]he Family and Medical Leave Act entitles employees of companies covered by the law to 12 weeks of unpaid time off during the first 12 months after the birth of a baby or the adoption of a child,” according to Reuters. While more companies, like Facebook, are offering paid time off, paid parental leave is still very hard to come by in the United States.
