Who Wants to Become a Seafaring Viking?

If you’re brave, adventurous and don’t get seasick, you may be able to experience what it was like to be a seagoing Viking — more or less.

Draken Harald Hårfagre (“Dragon Harald Fairhair” in English) is a replica of an old Viking longship, built in 2012 in Haugesund, Norway. Next May, she sets out on a voyage from Norway to Newfoundland, with stops in Iceland and Greenland.

The application page says:

The voyage from Norway to America will be a challenging and demanding but unique experience.  It is important to be of good health and have a strong physique. Draken Harald Hårfagre is an open ship, there is no under deck and the only shelter is a small tent. It will be cold, wet and hard work. We will need crew from April to September 2016, and we want our crew to be a part of the project for at least 2 months at a time.

The ship lacks much more shelter than a tent, but it does have an engine (so you won’t be rowing all the way) along with a modern stove and toilet. From the looks of the photo, you probably won’t have to wear just bearskins, leather and a horned helmet either (at least we hope not).
