Barbra Streisand, Pedophilia, and the Left's Slippery Slope of Sexual Deviancy

When I saw Barbra Streisand trending on Twitter, I assumed that she had died. Babs, of course, is still alive. It’s her career that is dead. The once-revered-but-now-hated pop culture icon made the mistake of expressing culturally unacceptable beliefs about Michael Jackson and his alleged sexual fondness for children. As I read tweet after tweet condemning Streisand, I couldn’t help but wonder how the tweets will age. Watching our society slide into moral degradation, few conservative Christians doubt that the day is coming when pedophilia will be a culturally acceptable practice. Because of that, the left may want to hold off on tearing any Barbra Streisand statues down and save themselves the embarrassment of having to rebuild them in the near future.

In case you missed it, Streisand told the UK’s The Times that she believes Michael Jackson’s accusers are telling the truth. She then made the jaw-dropping statement that Jackson’s “sexual needs were his sexual needs, coming from whatever childhood he has or whatever DNA he has. ”

“You can say ‘molested,’ but those children, as you heard say [the grown-up Robson and Safechuck], they were thrilled to be there. They both married and they both have children, so it didn’t kill them,” she added.

As I wrote above, the Twitterverse went berserk. Charlotte Clymer of the Human Rights Campaign tweeted the sentiments of many in the LGBTQ community:

Most of the tweets condemn the 76-year-old singer for victim-blaming and general awfulness. Frankly, picking which tweets to include is exhausting because there are so many to choose from. If you think I’m being hyperbolic, search “Barbra Streisand” on Twitter. You’ll see.

In response to the uproar, Streisand issued a “clarification.” Although, I’m not sure that she can put this genie back in the bottle. In her follow-up statement, the singer claimed that her “words do not reflect her true feelings” and that she didn’t “mean to dismiss the trauma” the victims have experienced. In other words, her new words completely contradict her previous words. No doubt, like me, those outraged by her initial comments will see through her doublespeak.

For the record, I unequivocally condemn Streisand’s words. The alleged actions of Michael Jackson are reprehensible. Whether a victim of child molestation has a normal adulthood or not is irrelevant. Victims enjoying marriage and kids later in life do not justify an adult fulfilling their sexual urges with children.

One point Streisand made, though, is where I think the left is going to end up backtracking on their condemnation of her in a few years. The claim that “they were thrilled to be there” fits in nicely with the move to legitimize pedophilia. Make no mistake: the sexual revolution’s slippery slope is real and pedophilia is not far down on that slide.

In 2014, the New York Times ran an op-ed by Margo Kaplan, a law professor at Rutgers, that argued for the de-criminalization of pedophilia. In her article, Kaplan was very careful to never condone adults having sex with children. What she does do, though, is use much of the same language utilized by LGBTQ activists. She argues that pedophilia is not the same as molestation but is a sexual attraction to children. She adds, “A second misconception is that pedophilia is a choice.”

To be clear, and in the issue of honesty and fairness, Kaplan says multiple times that it’s not okay for a pedophile to act on his desires. But the tone of her article and her choice of words help lay the foundation for the normalization of pedophilia. In fact, there are already organizations advocating for the legitimization of man-boy love.

Leftists can cry “foul” as loudly as they want, but the fact remains that when sexual ethics are untethered from the absolute authority of the Bible, all bets are off. For example, a proponent of same-sex marriage cannot legitimately provide a definition of marriage that excludes a father and his adult daughter getting married. Peering into the future, proponents of the sexual revolution are not going to be able to provide a definition of sexual freedom that excludes pedophilia.

If biology is no longer determinative of gender, why is it determinative in sexuality? If a ten-year-old boy is “thrilled” to be in a sexual relationship with an adult, what right do those who dismiss biology as determinative have to deny that ten-year-old his truth? If pedophilia is not a choice, as Kaplan argues, then what right does society have to deny pedophiles their truth? A happy man and a happy boy having sex should be nobody’s business if the sexual revolution is correct. So, yes, the sexual revolution’s slippery slope is indeed real.

Remember, it wasn’t too long ago that pro-choice advocates were claiming that they only wanted abortions to be safe and rare. Now, in 2019, Democrats are openly advocating for infanticide. Leading up to the Obergefell decision, conservative Christians were assured that legalizing same-sex marriage would in no way impact us. Ask the scores of Christian businessmen and women who have been sued and harassed because they refused to violate their conscience and take part in a same-sex marriage if the Obergefell decision has impacted their freedom of religion.

For conservative Christians, none of this comes as a surprise. Romans 1 gives us a snapshot of what happens when people steer into open rebellion against God, especially in regards to sexual rebellion. In verses 24 and 25, Paul writes the sober words, “Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.”

Rebelling against God, especially His sexual ethics, brings destruction and an increase in moral degradation. Barbra Streisand may currently be contradicting mainstream thought, but, unless God intervenes, there is coming a day when what she said about pedophilia will be accepted by our increasingly wicked society. Mark my words, one day the Democratic platform will include promotion of pedophilia rights.
