Adorable Tykes Ask Justin Trudeau: 'Why Did You Paint Your Face Brown?'

It’s been three weeks since somebody dug up old pictures and video of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau clowning around in blackface. (Or, as characterized by a sympathetic media, “brownface” or “face-darkening makeup.”) He really seemed to enjoy it:

Then the media moved on, not pressing Trudeau to resign, because he’s a liberal icon. And after all, it’s only Canada. It’s not as if he’s somebody important, like an SNL cast member.

But just because our moral, ethical, and intellectual betters in the press have given Trudeau a free pass, that doesn’t mean his actions have been forgotten. The two adorable Canadian tykes you’re about to see certainly haven’t let it go.

While appearing on a Facebook Watch series called New Mom, Who Dis?, Trudeau took questions from some little kids. Including these two girls, who seem to take him by surprise:

“Why did you paint your face brown?”

“Ooooh. Um, it was something I shouldn’t have done, ’cause it hurt people. Um, it’s not something that, uh, you, you should do. Uh, and that is something that I learned. I didn’t know it back then, but I know it now. And I’m sorry I hurt people.”

“But did you paint your nose and your hands brown?”

“Mm-hm. Yeah. And it was the wrong thing to do.”

Yikes. That was so cringey, I almost feel bad for him.

This answer will be sufficient, because Trudeau isn’t a conservative. His apology will be accepted, because it’s not politically advantageous to reject it. But it’s good to see that these kids have enough self-respect to look this guy in the eye and ask what he was thinking. They’re already overqualified for a career in journalism.
