Rashida Tlaib Wants to Stop ICE with a Hunger Strike, or Maybe Not

As Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar compete to see who can say the dumbest thing possible, as loudly as possible, one of their woke freshman congresswomen-of-color keeps getting left out: Rashida Tlaib. It’s been a while since Tlaib yelled about “impeach the motherf***er,” and she’s fallen way behind her colleagues when it comes to riling up the troops. I’m not sure her latest outburst will close the gap, but it’s pretty entertaining nonetheless.

Brent Scher, Washington Free Beacon:

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.) urged her supporters to join her in a hunger strike to push for action to “shut down” U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), arguing the radical push to abolish ICE can’t be achieved by Congress.

Tlaib, headlining a Detroit fundraiser this past weekend for the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights, complained of colleagues who are constantly “policing” what she says and lack willingness to embrace bold stands such as abolishing ICE. She called on her activist audience to join her in a hunger strike at the border…

A hunger strike? Whoa. Did she really say that? Let’s listen:

“I want you not to only share things on social media, but pick up the phone, because many of your Michigan delegation members need to also be loud and clear about this action. You know, there’s so many movements that we’re all part of. It won’t take us getting that information from the subpeona only. You know what it’s gonna take? Movements outside of the halls of Congress. Movements outside of White House (sic). I want you all to shut them down. We can shut them down. Don’t wait for this Congress to act. Shut ’em down. I know what they’re gonna say: ‘What do you mean, Rashida?’ Well, I’ll tell you, there are some people that are using hunger strike (sic), all these other things, going to the border. And I plan to.”

Which is she planning to do, though? Go to the border? Do a hunger strike? Both?

As Scher reports:

In a Thursday email, Tlaib’s communications director Denzel McCampbell said Tlaib was not actually calling for a hunger strike, but rather stating that “she knows of folks who have done” them.

Oh. Well, you can listen to that audio again and decide for yourself whether the Tlaib camp is telling the truth, I guess.

I’ve never seen the point of hunger strikes. How is punishing yourself supposed to punish the people you’re starving yourself over? How is your rumbly tummy supposed to convince immigration enforcement to stop doing their jobs? Apparently Tlaib realized the same thing.

Dumb idea. Great tune, though!
