In 2010, ABC News reported on the growing number of child sacrifices in Uganda. While the cities have benefited from capitalism and education, much of the country is still oppressed by poverty and cultic beliefs passed down through generations. ABC News revealed that because of the clash between the riches of some and the poverty of many who are still trapped by ancient mysticism, “a gruesome new phenomenon has emerged — and Uganda’s children are paying the price. Children are disappearing, victims of human sacrifice.”
ABC News reported that many Ugandans believe that child sacrifices appease the gods and bring riches as a reward. According to the story, “Ugandan law enforcement officials say parents have sold their children to the witch doctors for slaughter. If they can’t find a child to buy, they snatch one.”
That was seven years ago, and things have only gotten worse since then.
In a report about the rise of child sacrifices in Uganda, the Religion News Service explains, “Times are tough in Uganda, and people are looking to sacrifices to improve their fortunes. The worst drought in over half a century has hit parts of East Africa, leaving more than 11 million people in this landlocked nation facing food insecurity and 1.6 million on the brink of famine, according to the Ugandan government.”
Like ABC News, RNS reports that the desire for wealth is driving the gruesome practice of child sacrifices. With the growing food shortage, Ugandans are increasingly turning to witch doctors in hopes of currying favor with the gods through child sacrifice.
The sacrifices are violent, and usually involve the slow removal of body parts. RNS tells the story of one mother who “sobbed as she described how her 8-year-old son was found in a nearby swamp in February without teeth, lips, ears and genitals.”
Christian organizations are teaming up with the Ugandan government to combat the growing problem of child sacrifices.
“Pastor Peter Sewakiryanga, who heads Kyampisi Childcare Ministries, a Christian organization that fights child sacrifice in Uganda, said children disappear in the country every week,” RNS reported. “They are often found dead, or alive with missing body parts.”
It’s tempting for Americans to pass judgment on Uganda. However, as a society, we may want to remove the beam in our own eye first.
Over 3,000 babies are murdered every day in the United States of America. In this country, we sacrifice our children to the god named the sexual revolution. The high priests at Planned Parenthood reach inside the mother and rip the baby apart piece by piece. Uganda has yet to reach the number of child sacrifices made each year in America. Regardless of a number of child sacrifices, the practice is a sin before the Creator of the Universe.
Make no mistake, God abhors child sacrifices. In the Bible, child sacrifices were emblematic of the Israelites’ rebellion at their lowest points in their history. 2 Kings 21:8 tells us that King Manasseh “burned his son as an offering and did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger.” Many years later, Manasseh’s grandson Josiah obeyed God and tore down all the idols and altars to the false gods. It was too late, though. God punished the people.
Ultimately, that story, found in both 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles, tells the reader that sin has to be punished; good deeds cannot atone for sin. On a secondary level, it speaks to God’s disgust with child sacrifices. Whether in the cultic practice of child sacrifices in Uganda or the “sanitized” child sacrifices in this country to the false god of the sexual revolution, God will one day bring His wrath to bear on the practice.
