Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone maker, will launch its new free music download service Thursday. The move could become the underpinnings for a battle between the Finnish firm and Apple. While the iPhone is the acknowledged smartphone leader, don’t underestimate the “killer app” effect. Mobile music downloads are a rapidly growing phenomenon and nothing sells better than “free”. Add to that Apple’s recent threats to close the iTunes store if it can’t make a profit and the EU efforts to open the proprietary iTunes platform to other players and an interesting new picture emerges in the phone sector.
