Shorter George Clooney: Barack Obama is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I’ve ever known in my life:
Mr. Clooney plays the presidential candidate but told reporters at the festival he is not looking to be one in real life.
“As for running for president, look, there’s a guy in office right now who is smarter than almost anyone you know, who’s nicer and who has more compassion than almost anyone you know. And he’s having an almost impossible time governing. Why would anybody volunteer for that job?” Mr. Clooney told a news conference.
“I have a really good job. I get to hang out with very seductive people. So I have no interest.”

“I’m an old-time liberal and I don’t apologize for it,” Clooney told Newsweek. Good for him. And certainly, regardless of how liberal he is, he’s undeniably “old-time.” I don’t mean in the sense that he has the gloss of an old-time movie star, the nearest our age comes to the sheen of Cary Grant in a Stanley Donen picture, but that his politics are blessedly undisturbed by any developments on the global scene since circa 1974. Clooney’s other Oscar movie, Syriana, in which he stars and exec-produces, reveals that behind a murky Middle East conspiracy lies . . . the CIA and Big Oil! In Good Night, and Good Luck, he’s produced a film set in the McCarthy era that could have been made in the Jimmy Carter era.
No wonder he so adores our new Laurence Harvey Jimmy Carter.
Update: Or maybe he’s Bing Crosby (he certainly proven to all but the last of the diehard faithful that he’s not Hope) in a new “Road” picture. Because to paraphrase this headline at the Tatler, while you wait in line for a job interview, Obama is off on the Road to Bali.
