George Will: Obama Hits a Wall in Berlin

George Will appropriately takes BHO out to the woodshed in his latest column — though I’m not at all sure about the lede:

The question of whether Barack Obama’s second term will be a failure was answered in the affirmative before his Berlin debacle, which has recast the question, which now is: Will this term be silly, even scary in its detachment from reality?

Those of us who didn’t drink the Kool-Aid in 2008 will remember plenty of silliness from Mr. Obama long before he ever actually took office:

“We’re going to keep on praising together. I am confident that we can create a Kingdom right here on Earth.”

— Obama in October of 2007.

I am going to try to be so persuasive in the 20 minutes or so that I speak that by the time this is over, a light will shine down from somewhere.

It will light upon you. You will experience an epiphany. And you will say to yourself, I have to vote for Barack. I have to do it.

— Obama in February of 2008.

And of course, the all-time show-stopper from June of that year: “This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.”

The detachment from reality was always there. But more people have finally noticed, as blogger and frequent Tim Blair commenter “Paco” observed in September of 2008, that the bespoke clothes — including those finely-creased trousers that first caught David Brooks’ eye — have no emperor in them.
