I read a chapter on how to be an exceptional leader with interest as it focused on psychology and how important it is to connect emotionally with people. There was a quote by Maya Angelou as an example of this point that I found rather depressing: ….”People will forget what you said and did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.”
Whether in business or in the world at large, I think this quote sums up our society in the 21st century. A majority of our population is so focused on other people making them feel good that they can no longer tolerate the slightest deviation from their dopamine hit.
Businesses now exist to make certain segments of the population feel that they are good, wonderful people and what they do or produce is secondary. How can businesses do the work needed to produce new products and services if they have to waste so much time giving the illusion of making people feel good?
