New York Post columnist Michael Goodwin appeared on Fox and Friends Monday morning to talk about why he thinks former FBI Director James Comey’s “truth crusade” is really an anti-Trump one.
Goodwin said in a recent column that Comey is reminiscent of former FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover and that his clash with President Trump was “inevitable.”
“He [Comey] is very much cut from the same cloth as J. Edgar Hoover, who gathered dirt on all the presidents and kept his job forever because everyone was afraid to fire him,” Goodwin told host Steve Doocy. “Donald Trump was not afraid to fire J. Edgar Comey the Second.”
Goodwin went on to say that he thinks President Trump is correct in his assumption that Comey has been “a very big leaker.” He said that he documented three different cases in his column where stories in the New York Times or Washington Post looked like they had come from Comey himself. “And there are a number of others,” he added.
In his New York Post column, Goodwin said: “In calling Comey a ‘leaker,‘ Trump may have made the first understatement of his life.” He added, “My bet is that Comey was a fountain of leaks, and didn’t show interest in prosecuting others because of his own guilt.”
“It looks like all along that what happened is he was kind of secretly part of ‘the Resistance’ to Donald Trump and then once he gets fired, he’s out in the open,” Goodwin told Fox and Friends’ Steve Doocy. “He is clearly now the chief protagonist against the president in terms of the Robert Mueller special counsel investigation,” he added. “I think it’s an amazing situation because he and Mueller are friends. So I’m not sure how this works out, but right now it looks like Trump has two against one.”
Goodwin pointed out that Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last week looked like a prosecutor “laying out a case and then he’s arguing to the jury,” which in this case is the television audience. He noted it was “skillful, but I think it was also dirty.”
“I think Comey wants to see the president impeached,” Goodwin explained. “We know he met with Mueller. We know that Mueller has all the memos which Congress could not get, but some citizens have them. Some friends of Comey’s have them. Congress doesn’t have them. The public doesn’t have them. And look — Mueller reviewed and approved his testimony.”
