Donald Trump met behind closed doors with Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus in Washington, D.C., Thursday afternoon, and while the agenda for the meeting is not known, tongues are wagging about what the two may have talked about. It went well, according to Trump, who tweeted that he had a “nice meeting” with Priebus moments after leaving RNC headquarters.

Trump is coming off a particularly bad couple of weeks that have tested the patience of even his most ardent supporters. After he retweeted an unflattering picture of his main rival’s wife, Heidi Cruz, Ann Coulter — one of his biggest boosters — complained to Breitbart’s Milo Yiannopoulos, “Our candidate is mental! Do you realize our candidate is mental? It’s like constantly having to bail out your sixteen-year-old son from prison.”

Trump’s feud with closest rival Ted Cruz has become so vicious that he said earlier this week he no longer feels bound to the pledge he made to the party to support the eventual GOP nominee.

Trump’s volatility has been on full display over the past two days as he verbally attacked a reporter who accused his campaign manager of battery, disavowed the GOP loyalty oath, bemoaned the Geneva Conventions, and suggested that women should be punished for abortions if they become outlawed – before quickly reversing himself.

Since the beginning of his campaign, Trump has flirted with the idea of running on a third party ticket, but he would have to navigate some arcane election laws in order to pull it off at this late date.

And while the RNC has publicly said it would support Trump if he is the nominee, it has also been preparing for the possibility of a contested convention in July. Today the RNC launched a new website to educate the public on the rules if such a nominating process becomes necessary.
