The Monsters in This New Horror Film Are Literally Just White People

As you begin watching the trailer for the forthcoming Get Out (2017), a film directed by “Key and Peele” star Jordan Peele, you may be reminded of the 1967 classic Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Like that Sidney Poitier vehicle, Get Out centers around an interracial couple, consisting of a white woman and her black boyfriend, as she brings him home to meet her parents for the first time.

That’s where the similarities end. Get Out quickly goes off the rails to become a thriller in which the black protagonist finds himself hunted by his girlfriend’s hometown community. It becomes a horror film in which the monsters are literally just white people.

You could be forgiven for wondering whether this will be a comedy, given the ludicrous premise and the background of director Jordan Peele. However, nothing in the trailer indicates that the film will play for laughs.

This trailer, ridiculous as it is, effectively portrays how the Black Lives Matter crowd actually sees the world. It seems some people genuinely believe white people are monsters preying on blacks at every opportunity.

This is basically the inverse of the black savage trope. Imagine if someone made a horror film in which a white person found himself lost in a black neighborhood, surrounded by threatening caricatures. That sort of thing would be broadly condemned as inherently racist. Get Out, on the other hand, will probably be lauded as brilliant social commentary.
