Unable to afford another round of sex with a 16-year-old escort on Christmas Eve, a Chicago man admitted to strangling and punching her. Her body was found beaten, strangled, and with her throat cut.

First-degree murder suspect Antonio Rosales, 32, contacted Desiree Robinson through Backpage.com, a site that hosts classified ads, including an adult section. While in custody on Tuesday, Rosales confessed to strangling and punching Robinson, a prosecutor told The Chicago Tribune.

Prosecutors said Rosales was at a party in a garage in Markham, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The party started on Friday December 23 and continued into the early morning hours of Saturday. Around 3 a.m., Rosales left the garage and came back with the escort Robinson, whom he introduced as his friend. One witness reported seeing Robinson and Rosales appearing to have sex in a truck, and then Robinson left.

The escort returned to Markham that morning with friends, and they picked up Rosales a couple of blocks from the party. Robinson’s friends stayed in a vehicle and fell asleep while the victim and the suspect went into the garage.

The friends discovered the victim dead and in a pool of blood around 8:30 a.m. Rosales later admitted to requesting another round with the escort, who refused and insulted him. He also admitted to strangling and punching her as she tried to call for help. He also took the girl’s clothes off, but fled after he saw a pool of blood around her body.

A bloody knife was found in the garage, but Rosales seems to have denied using it.

“The defendant admitted that he had no money for the second encounter and he tried to negotiate an additional free 15 minutes,” Christian Dracopoulos, assistant state’s attorney, told reporters on Friday. “She refused his offer and insulted him. After, he punched her in the face and strangled her as she tried to call for help.”

Robinson’s mother Yvonne Robinson-Ambrose, said her daughter had been missing from their home since mid-December. “She wouldn’t let us know where she was,” Robinson-Ambrose said. The 16-year-old had been in contact with her family for days, but stopped contacting them before Christmas. Fearing she might be in trouble, her grandfather filed a missing person’s report with Chicago police on December 13.

On Friday, a Cook County judge denied bail for Rosales, who will return to court on January 18.
