(Yawn) Another Celebrity Plays Hitler Card Against Trump

Forget the race and gender cards. The rise of Donald Trump has celebrities rushing to use the ultimate speech weapon against the GOP nominee.

The Hitler card.

No, Trump hasn’t thrown anyone into an oven or launched a world war with his maniacal plans for world domination. He’s just crude and rude, and he occasionally talks about stamping out free speech. You can spout off 100 reasons to critique him, most of them wholeheartedly valid. He’s still got a long way to go to reach Hitler levels of barbarity.

That isn’t stopping some pretty big names from tying Trump directly to the 20th century’s biggest monster.

In a way, Trump has united some celebrities who rarely see eye to eye. A number of reliably Republican stars have resisted the Trump train. The liberal actor George Clooney doubled down on that by dubbing him a “xenophobic fascist.

That isn’t enough for some stars.

The latest Trump = Hitler attack comes courtesy of Billie Joe Armstrong. The Green Day singer last cracked wise about politics via the group’s “American Idiot” album, an assault against President George W. Bush.

The band has been oddly quiet about President Barack Obama’s serial lies (like the Iran ransom imbroglio), abuse of executive privilege or drone strikes.

Red hats, and the accompanying rhetoric, is another matter.

“He just said, ‘You have no options and I’m the only one, and I’m going to take care of it myself.’ I mean, that’s f—ing Hitler, man!” Armstrong proclaimed, likely referring to Trump’s convention speech.

“I don’t even know how else to explain it,” he continued. “I wish I were over-exaggerating. And sometimes maybe I do over-exaggerate with Bush. But with Trump, I just can’t wait ’til he’s gone.”

Consider that a belated apology for all the Bush bashing?

Armstrong’s spiel follows a number of high-profile Trump = Hitler comparisons. Sarah Silverman dressed up like Hitler to mock Trump during an appearance on TBS’s “Conan.”

Former “it” comic Tom Green cut a FunnyOrDie.com video dubbed “Do the Donald.” The clip featured Nazi soldiers celebrating Trump along with KKK-clad supporters.

The trend unofficially kicked off from an unlikely source. Comic Louis CK, who doesn’t typically get political (beyond random Sarah Palin attacks), fired off an open letter to Republican voters during the GOP primaries.

“Please stop it with voting for Trump,” C.K. writes. “It was funny for a little while. But the guy is Hitler. And by that I mean that we are being Germany in the ’30s. Do you think they saw the sh-t coming? Hitler was just some hilarious and refreshing dude with a weird comb over who would say anything at all.”

It’s still August. The election battle only gets hotter from here. Chances are more celebrities are itching to make similar comparisons … if only to get their name in the headlines anew.
