James Talarico Doubles Down on His ‘God Is Non-Binary’ Nonsense

James Talarico, the smug “progressive Christian” running for the Senate in Texas, who treats heresy like a branding strategy, is at it again. During a CNN appearance, he defended his claim that God is “non-binary” — and then doubled down on the absurdity.

Talarico said:

Well, I understand that that comment is a little provocative. I said it on the House floor when the extremists in the Republican legislature were picking on school kids who were different. But I don't think it's controversial theologically. Most Christians would acknowledge that God is beyond gender. In fact, the Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, said that in Christ there is neither male nor female.

And so if someone's got a problem with that statement, they shouldn't take it up with me; they should take it up with the Apostle Paul.

Here’s the clip:

There’s so much wrong with that statement. For starters, he’s taking the Apostle Paul’s words out of context. But hey, props to Talarico for using actual scripture this time instead of gnostic heresies (see the related link below).

The verse that Talarico takes way out of context is Galatians 3:28, which reads, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Here, Paul isn’t advocating for the erasure of gender altogether (in fact, he affirms traditional male and female roles throughout his epistles); rather, he’s saying that our status in Jesus overrides the distinctions that can divide us sometimes — like sex, nationality, or social status — and unites us in Him.

Furthermore, Talarico’s repeated assertions that God is “non-binary” are straight-up silly. Yes, God is genderless, but the Bible uses male pronouns to describe Him, calls Him our Father, and uses both masculine and feminine imagery to describe Him. But applying a woke framework to the truth that our human language is limited when it comes to describing the divine is erroneous. My Bible software, Logos (check it out for yourself), explains it this way:

A foundational theological counter rests on distinguishing between language about God and God’s actual nature. The biblical tradition consistently affirms that God transcends sexuality entirely yet employs masculine pronouns as a linguistic convention. This distinction matters: using masculine language doesn’t entail that God possesses masculine characteristics. The Bible itself clarifies God’s non-masculinity through the very texts that employ masculine pronouns.

A second line of argument addresses the incarnation. Jesus Christ, truly God and truly human, was born as a male Jew, yet the church confesses that God’s eternal essence was fully and truly reflected in this particular human form without distortion. This particularity — God’s self-revelation in a specific historical person — grounds theological language. When Jesus called God “Father,” he was naming God according to his true relational identity as Son, not placing God within a biological category, and the New Testament carefully fills in the proper content to these names to prevent misunderstanding.

There are so many non-Christlike words I want to use to describe Talarico, but I’ll refrain. Instead, I’ll leave it up to Martin Luther: “Look how this great heretic speaks brazenly and sacrilegiously.”

Side note: That link for the quote above takes you to a generator page that will serve you up a random Luther zinger. It’s a hoot! Here’s another example (and it applies brilliantly to Talarico): “Why would anyone tolerate such things from someone like you, a rotten paunch, crude a**, and fart-a**?”

I don’t see Talarico winning the general election, but I can’t resist one more Luther insult that I’ll aim straight at Talarico: “May the Lord Jesus protect me and all devout souls from your contagion and your company!”
