Video: 'Saturday Night Live' Skewers Star Wars Toy Collectors

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock lately, Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens this coming weekend. And of course we know the arrival of the newest chapter in the story that took place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away means more than just a night at the movies. The toys released in conjunction with the new film have already helped rescue a lackluster shopping season, and experts estimate a stunning $5 billion in merchandise revenue the first year alone.

When it comes to Star Wars, kids aren’t the only ones buying the toys. Plenty of adults are snapping up merchandise to add to their collections, and “Saturday Night Live” seized on this phenomenon in a hilarious commercial parody.

In the clip, “grown up” collectors express as much excitement as the kids (if not more), and they extol the virtues of keeping the toys in the packaging and in display cases, never to play with them. The collectors correct children on the names and fighting styles of characters and even demonstrate the proper way to land the Millennium Falcon. I showed the clip to a friend of mine who collects the toys, and he said the characterizations are spot on. The result is one of SNL‘s best bits all year.
