Colbert the Fake Martyr v. Kirk the True Martyr

This year, we have witnessed fake claims of martyrdom from leftists and the actual martyrdom of a prominent conservative who simply debated people with whom he disagreed.

First of all, to define our terms, as leftists never do, a martyr is someone who is killed purely for his beliefs. Sometimes, in a less literal sense, the term is applied to someone who suffers a great deal for his beliefs, and in this way the Catholic Church (for instance) sometimes refers to the “martyrdom” of people who died after being repeatedly tortured and/or exiled. But no matter whether you are using the literal definition or the more figurative one, Stephen Colbert definitely does not qualify, though Charlie Kirk does.

Why am I using former Late Night host Colbert as an example? Because he actually claimed to be a martyr after his unfunny and extremely woke CBS show was canceled in July due to extremely low ratings. Instead of doing a little self-examination and recognizing that his own radical opinions and Trump Derangement Syndrome drove away viewers and made his show too unprofitable to continue, Colbert wanted to blame Donald Trump and pretend the only reason he was fired is because of the Bad Orange Man.

After cleverly telling Trump to “go f**k yourself,” Colbert half-whined, half-joked about another late night host, “Kimmel, I am the martyr. There’s only room for one on this cross. And the view is fantastic from up here. I can see your house.”

Whether he really believes he is a martyr or not — and he definitely has a strong victim complex going — there are many other leftists who have fully bought into the idea that experiencing consequences for their actions or not being celebrated to the degree they expect is equivalent to genocide. I personally read dozens of comments from leftists on social media platforms, particularly woke Bluesky, actually claiming that Charlie Kirk stating historical facts about Gaza or denying that a person can alter his biological sex is equivalent to getting shot in the head.

One deranged Bluesky user, “June!,” who was ecstatic at Kirk’s assassination, seemingly claimed his murder was justified because a transgender neighbor is being slowly “ostracized.” By which "June!" means that not every single person in America flies Pride flags and thinks a man can become a woman by castrating himself, so obviously a peaceful conservative debater should be shot to death. The level of delusion is mind-blowing.

But that brings us to the point that Kirk actually does meet the definition of a martyr. And his assassination is a wake-up call to people who thought that by playing nice with the left, they could avoid violence. Kirk was particularly known for simply debating people, in the most respectful and charitable manner possible. And yet he was killed. His arguments for the truth were so powerful that Tyler Robinson (the alleged shooter) wanted him dead. And the same people who poured champagne and danced with joy at Kirk’s assassination would be just as delighted to see everyone who agrees with Kirk dead.

There is a very old Christian saying: "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church." The idea underlying this saying from Tertullian is that the heroism of martyrs inspires other people to accept and defend the beliefs for which they died. That should be true of Kirk’s death. We should be more determined than ever now to tell the truth to the fake martyrs of the left in honor of the true martyr for freedom.
