Today is Mothers’ Day, on which we celebrate the women who physically or spiritually gave us life, love, and guidance. My own mother has always been my truest friend and advisor and a wonderful role model.
Fulton Sheen, America’s favorite archbishop of the mid-20th century, wrote beautifully on the topic of motherhood, noting that mothers don’t just give life physically — there is also a deeply spiritual aspect to the union between mother and child from pregnancy onwards. In a marvelous way, women can share in the creative power of God and experience an intimate union with other humans — their babies.
According to Sheen, “It is well known that women are capable of far more sustained sacrifice than men; a man may be a hero in a crisis, which enables a woman to be heroic through the years, months, days and even seconds of her life, when the very repetitive monotony of her tasks wears down the spirit. Not only a woman's days but her nights--must share in the Calvary of Motherhood.”
Sheen declared that the daily, hourly little sacrifices that are not so little after all ensure “women have a surer understanding of the doctrine of redemption than men have; they have come to associate the risk of life and death in childbirth, and to understand the sacrifice of self to another through the many months preceding it.” A woman’s body nourishes and nurtures her baby in an often exhausting but rewarding sacrifice throughout pregnancy.
“During pregnancy, some baby cells migrate into the mother's bloodstream and then return to the child. It's called "mother-fetal microchimerism".

Interestingly, the same leftists who scream that women have to act like men to be valuable also denigrate motherhood, woman’s greatest gift, a gift men can never have. That’s how you know that their ideology is demonic, not divine. God gives life, and the devil ends life. The Marxists who love abortion, euthanasia, jihad, transgenderism, sterilization, contraception, and all the other methods of killing or castrating people are clearly on the wrong side.

Sheen touched on this misunderstanding of maternity’s honor, arguing woman is “endowed with a kind of priestly power, she, too, brings God to man, and man to God. She brings God to man by accepting her mother's role, and thus permitting God to infuse a new soul in her body for it to bear.”
Leftists want women to believe that having children destroys their happiness and ends their dreams, but in reality, what greater happiness is there than loving and helping another? It is this sustained sacrifice that modern women reject; and modern women struggle with depression and anxiety at increasing rates. God knew best all along.
Sheen put it beautifully:
If motherhood is seen as a matter involving only a woman and a man, it is seen too astigmatically, and without the honor that it is due. For to comprehend the real significance of motherhood, we must include the spiritual element that goes to make a child--we must see the human woman co-operating with her husband, the father of the human baby, and with God the Father of a soul that is eternal, indestructible and unlike any other ever formed throughout the history of the world. Thus every human motherhood involves a partnership with the Divine.
