Anti-Christian Bias in the West and the Battle of Clontarf

Peter Morrison

The new Trump task force on combating anti-Christian bias met just in time for the April 23 anniversary of a 1014 Irish battle that was a historic victory for Christian warriors against a coalition that included, and largely broke the local power of, pagan Vikings.

The Battle of Clontarf occurred on April 23, Good Friday of that year, on the shores of Dublin Bay between the forces of Ireland’s High King Brian Boru and a coalition of Irish rebels and Vikings. While there is debate as to how many of the Vikings were pagan, contemporary or proximate sources framed the battle as not merely a political and military contest, but also a religious contest, to determine if the Catholic Christian Irish or the pagan Norsemen would dominate Ireland. While Brian Boru was tragically killed after the battle while praying in his tent, his troops were the victors, and Viking power in Ireland received a massive blow.

In our day, as we struggle against a new paganism, Christians in America should take heart from heroes of the past, both from America and from other Western nations. For though most of us will not be called upon to take up arms, as Brian’s fighters at Clontarf did, or as the Patriots did at Lexington and Concord, still we are in the midst of a culture war. The Democrats have been trying to undermine America through politics and culture ever since they lost the Civil War, and despite Trump’s 2024 election victory, they are still doing a disturbingly good job of it.

One sign of hope is the slowly reawakening interest in Judeo-Christian religion across America, including among young people. The Founding Fathers were perfectly convinced that America would fail if most Americans did not adhere to Judeo-Christian morality and religion, and, like the 11th-century Irish, we are discovering that having hordes of neo-pagans living in our midst does really put our nation’s future in jeopardy. That is why it is encouraging that Donald Trump’s administration launched a task force to combat anti-Christian bias, making a welcome change from the anti-Christian persecution of the Biden-Harris administration.

On April 23, the White House posted on X that, following Trump’s executive order “to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias in the federal government,” Attorney General Pam Bondi convened “the inaugural Task Force meeting at @TheJusticeDeptJoined by Cabinet leaders, the Task Force is dedicated to ending the anti-Christian weaponization of government.”

May the spirit and faith of Brian Boru arise again both in his own country of Ireland and also in the United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump.
