Why Do Americans Care Way More About Dogs than Babies?

I love dogs but we should all be terribly worried about our nation, as the killing of a single dog by a high-profile Republican triggered far more rage in the U.S., even among Republicans, than the vicious dismemberment and murder of millions of unborn babies does.

The majority of Americans believe in allowing abortion in at least some cases, even though science has proved that life begins at conception and every method of abortion is painful and brutal to the baby. Even most Republicans have been enthusiastically expressing their support for baby murder in some cases, even though abortion is not a top issue for most voters this election season.

When a Republican governor shot a puppy, we rightly reacted with disgust and horror. Yet the butchery of completely innocent human babies is either ignored or justified. What happened to the moral compass of America? When did we start valuing animal life far above human life? The pro-life Founders wouldn’t recognize this country.

Americans finally found a bipartisan issue on which they can agree — outrage over South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s admission in her book that she cold-bloodedly shot a puppy. Fellow Republicans want to have nothing more to do with her, and Democrats are naturally furious, too. Don’t get me wrong — I too was horrified by the story, and as a dog lover, I think there’s something both psychologically and morally wrong with a person who shoots a puppy and has no regrets. But it is disappointing to discover that the very people denouncing Noem for her cruelty either eagerly support or calmly compromise with the even more barbarous murder of unborn babies.

The Founding Fathers opposed abortion because they understood it was murder. Considering they also fought a Revolution that seemed nigh impossible to win rather than cave on any point to the British empire, I think it is safe to say that they would not support any compromise with evil for a possible political advantage, either. That said, however, the majority of Americans do not count abortion as one of their top priorities this election cycle, so Republicans don’t need to worry that being pro-life will lose them votes. The people who put abortion at the top of their list of priorities were never going to vote Republican anyway.

That said, abortion is also scientifically and constitutionally condemnable. The 14th Amendment guarantees the right to life unless deprived by due process of law, which is literally impossible in the case of completely innocent unborn babies. Science, meanwhile, also supports the pro-life position. Each baby is a completely unique human being from the moment of conception. Surgical abortion involves dismembering and/or beheading a baby in the womb, and sometimes involves crushing a baby’s head or poisoning him. Abortion pills, meanwhile, essentially starve the baby to death. How can Americans, especially religious Americans, justify such savagery?

But abortion also harms the mothers, and it certainly doesn’t help them. Indeed, abortion is never necessary to save a woman’s life, and abortion is tied to an increased risk of mental health problems, including depression, alcohol abuse, substance abuse, and suicide. Abortion just increases the trauma for rape victims, and, according to Human Life International in 2022, “nearly 80% of rape victims who had an abortion later regretted their decision. By contrast, more than 80% of women who did not abort after rape were happy that they had continued the pregnancy.” Millions of couples are waiting to adopt in the U.S., and more pregnancy centers are waiting to help young mothers than there are abortion clinics.

The Arizona senate just repealed a pro-life law and is sending it to radical pro-death Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) to sign. Sadly, the last time an Arizona government entity (a court) made a pro-life decision, both Democrats and Republicans decried it, and I guarantee that this new move from the Senate will not illicit half the outrage that Noem’s dog shooting did. This is the moral bankrupting of America.
