Give the Gift of Fear This Year

A dog (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Blenheim-coloured) lying in the grass.

I did the unspeakable PC violation last week — I published the name of one of the San Bernardino terrorists, Syed Farook, as my Facebook status.

Just the name, nothing more.

I was immediately called on the Facebook Carpet of Shame for fear and hate mongering.

A terrorist name of Anglo extraction (yes, the McVeigh card was played) was referenced in an effort to ethnically chasten me, as I am of Scots-Irish extraction.

I queried the poster if Anglos had recently declared war on America as ISIS/radical Islam had. I was just making sure I hadn’t missed an invasion of tartan-wearing WASPS overnight.

There have been quite a few posts from my PC friends on ethnicity, gun control, and how praying won’t help — but most of all, on how they chose not to live in FEAR.

Then I must suppose they should have no fear over my right to purchase firearms, right?

The constant old saw of, “I chose not to live in FEAR” kept resonating in my perceived little scardey-cat head like a schoolyard taunt.

Am I really afraid?

Am I shaking, except while jogging?

Do you see me cowering as I purchase critical load rounds?

Heck no. “Au contraire mon frère, and set up some more cans for practice.”

FEAR is an intuitive gift, it instinctually triggers the response of flight or fight, it triggers survival.

Gavin de Becker, renowned security expert, writes in The Gift of Fear:

“You have the gift of a brilliant internal guardian that stands ready to warn you of hazards and guide you through risky situations.”

The neighbors of Syed Farook were fearful of him, his associates and activities, but never listened to their FEAR; they instead suppressed it with another kind of FEAR, FEAR of rejection from your irrational PC friends.

A confidential phone call to authorities is nothing to FEAR, but your PC friends overlord-ing your intuition, is.

I imagine the families of those so coldly murdered by Farook and his wife have enough to deal with. Trying to forgive those who stood by and did nothing shouldn’t be another burden on their already heavy hearts.

Tell your PC friends to go judge those who still stone women to death for adultery. That ought to keep them off your back for a while.

Sometimes, I jokingly refer to myself as a self-diagnosed hyper-vigilant because I watch my topknot just like “Bear Claw sez to.”

Maybe it’s because I’ve seen the other shoe drop, maybe it’s because my intuition has saved me from getting into that car, or crossing that street, or stepping too close to the edge.

Our family folklore regales the time our neighbor’s house was being burglarized, unbeknownst to us. We encountered the 17-year-old “lookout” casually strolling in our yard. When questioned about what he was doing there, he said he was looking for his friend Frank.

I told my husband I was calling the police.

My husband responded, “You’re going to call the police on this kid because he’s looking for his friend Frank?”

“Yes,” I barked back as I headed to the phone. “He’s lying. No one his age has a friend named Frank. They’re called Justin or Joshua and he’s so nervous I can smell it on him, plus his hood is up and it’s 65 degrees.” Before you get all “hoodie” on me, the kid was white.

Police responded to the call. The house had been burglarized and my neighbors thanked me later for being FEARFUL.

Let’s face it — FEAR saves the gazelle that looks up first, smells and hightails it from the waterhole ahead of the others, before the lion grabs hold.

Don’t let the PC police, the government, the organizations, or your in-laws force you to go against your inner guardian. They always have an agenda and it’s not leaning in your favor, especially when it toys with your right to bear arms.

Laurence Gonzales succinctly wraps it up:

“Bureaucracies force us to practice nonsense. And if you rehearse nonsense, you may one day find yourself the victim of it.” — from Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies and Why.

Free your mind, let your instincts kick in — we’ll need them in the coming days. Be a sentry, a warrior, or an informant. Find your niche to help in this battle with those who would harm our families, our country, and us.

Don’t give in to second thoughts; you may not have the luxury of another.

Give your intuition the benefit of the doubt, and give yourself the gift of FEAR this year.
